Head Tapping For Tinnitus Relief

Some people, often those with somatic tinnitus (that which gets more/less prominent with a certain body movement), find that head tapping has helped reduce their tinnitus symptoms.
Personally, I don’t think this is because head tapping is particularly magical, but mainly because:
1) it is distracting
2) it is mindful - it causes you to focus on what is happening right now, in your body. So long as you don’t find a sensation troubling/irritating, that is usually a good thing
3) it’s rather pleasant, for some reason
Anyway, the Jackson Family recently acquired a massage shower head. This is not an expensive++ addition, it just screws on in place of your usual shower head. It reduces the flow of water and modulates it, making it pulse or become more forceful*.
I have let the pulse setting fall on my head a few times now, while rinsing my hair, and have indeed found it relaxing. Relaxing, for me, means that my tinnitus is more likely to fall into the background. It’s only really noticeable when I’m stressed out, but it made a difference.
As with all tinnitus advice, anything you find soothing or relaxing is generally going to help your tinnitus symptoms. But you can shoot yourself in the foot if you approach it with an “I’m trying to get rid of tinnitus” or “let’s see if this works on my tinnitus” mindset.
The best way is to tell yourself “I’m going to try this out and see if I enjoy it, or find it soothing”. Reflect back another time, and ask yourself if tinnitus is less noticeable, but make relaxation your goal.
*It’s great for cleaning the grout too…
++ as always, research reviews before purchasing and don’t buy anything unaffordable for your tinnitus. Professional help will always be worth the expense, tips and tricks like this are not worth going into debt for.
