Troubleshooting: Android Phones and Hearing Aids

If your aids are already connected, but not working correctly, unpair them first. Then follow instructions for pairing.

UNPAIRING AIDS

  1. Open Settings

  2. Bluetooth

  3. Look for the device in your list of paired devices, e.g. Anna’s Hearing Aid

  4. Tap the Gear/Cog icon next to the name of the aid

  5. Tap Unpair in the dialog box that pops up

  6. Repeat for the second aid, if you can see it in the list

RESET BLUETOOTH ON PHONE

If you’ve had repeated problems pairing the aids, try this before setting the aids up again:

  1. Open Settings

  2. General Management

  3. Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings

  4. Once complete, turn the phone off and on again

PAIRING AIDS

  1. Put the aids in their charger (or turn them off manually, but I prefer the charger method)

  2. Open Settings on your phone

  3. Tap Bluetooth

  4. Remove the aids from their charger (or turn them on, checking that you can hear sound coming through them)

  5. You now have roughly 1.5 minutes to finish, before the aids go out of pairing mode

  6. Your Bluetooth menu on the phone should be displaying a section called Available Devices, the aids should appear here when they are found

  7. When the aid’s name appears in the list, tap on it

  8. A pairing request should come up on the screen. Tap Pair

  9. Tap Pair for the second aid when it is found

  10. Check your aids are now showing in the Paired Devices section.

Your aids should also both now show in the manufacturer’s app on your phone. You may need to close the app and reopen it.

If the above all fails, charge the aids fully and try again. Common reasons for being unable to find/pair a previously happy aid include:

  • Aid has run out of charge but you haven’t noticed

  • Aid was not charged sufficiently overnight (it may still be working but not have enough energy to pair).

  • You’ve turned it on manually and haven’t held the button down long enough for it to come on. This happens more than you might think, as people can hear through the other aid/their residual hearing.

Rarely, there is a fault with the Bluetooth module of the hearing aid. It will not be able to pair until it has been returned to the manufacturer for repair/replacement. This is time-consuming and means you are without your aid for a week or more, so please try all these steps first.

If you keep getting stuck, ask your audiologist for advice. If they cannot help in clinic, your aid may need to be sent away for repair.
