Part 4 - Dinah’s Cochlear Implant Journey

We’re following Dinah, one of my patients, in real time as she goes through the process of having a Cochlear Implant (CI). This should appeal patient and audiologists alike, as I tell both sides of the story.

Part 4 - Post Op

Dinah’s operation took place on 19 August and took 1-1.5 hours. It was a success, but we won’t know for sure until switch-on (adding the receiver and sending sound to the electrodes). I asked whether she had pain, and she said:

“Yes, ”.

But not too bad. She is brave!

The Cochlear Kanso 2 is the unit that has been selected for her. The outside part of this looks like this:

It really is very small and low-profile. If you are able to have the second part of the unit implanted under the skin, as Dinah has, it really is amazingly discreet. Obviously there are some who do not have hair in this area, but even so I would not be disappointed. It is not much more noticeable than an old NHS aid, but for the placement.

Dinah will hear for the first time through her implant, including high frequencies that she has not heard (naturally OR aided) for 20+ years.
