I’ve been birdsong watching today. This image is a snapshot of the birds singing in the trees around our garden. The red mass at the left side is the background noise of the M62, and the peaks after that mass are all the different calls of the different birds.
I watched it in real time, I could see the peaks forming of all the birds I can still hear (on the graph, that’s the red mass of low frequency traffic noise, then birds from 1.5 to 5 thousand Hertz).
I could also see the calls of the birds I no longer hear. Together, it’s like watching an orchestra who you know are all playing, but you can only hear the woodwind section. But without this gadget, I wouldn’t know they were there at all. Now I know that the bird who makes a two tone call actually makes a third one right after, at an even higher note.
Without the hearing aids, I would have no hearing over 1k, and my world is dominated by traffic noise, the washing machine, and the middle sound in everyone’s words, so I am indeed grateful to get a few more years of hearing those birds in the middle! If you’re someone who’s putting off helping their hearing, the sooner you do it, the more we can save, for you to enjoy for years to come.
